JAN’s pop-up restaurant in Franschhoek offers a Michelin-star culinary experience that beautifully blends South African flavours with exquisite storytelling in an unforgettable setting.
Imagine this: a Michelin-starred dining experience right here on our beautiful South African soil.
It’s true, and it’s happening thanks to the culinary genius of Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. If you’ve ever dreamt of tasting the magic of a Michelin-star restaurant without having to board a plane, then JAN’s pop-up restaurant in Franschhoek is your dream come true.
In September 2023, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen—South Africa’s first Michelin-star chef—brought his love for local cuisine back home in the most incredible way possible. Teaming up with La Motte Wine Estate, Jan opened the second season of JAN Franschhoek, a limited-time-only pop-up restaurant that celebrates his passion for South African flavours. And let me tell you, it’s not just a dinner; it’s an experience like no other.

A Journey Into a World of Flavour
I recently had the absolute pleasure of visiting JAN’s pop-up in Franschhoek, and I have to say, it was love at first bite. The evening began at La Motte Manor House, where we were welcomed with drinks and had a chance to soak in the beauty of Pierneef’s paintings. From there, we were whisked away to the historical Veepos farmhouse cottage, hidden among fields of fragrant lavender.
This wasn’t just any farmhouse—it felt like stepping back in time. Built in the 1700s, the cottage had an air of nostalgia, like Ouma had just stepped out for a moment. Inside, a single, beautifully set table for twenty awaited us, perfectly intimate for a night of culinary exploration. Every detail had been thoughtfully curated to create an atmosphere where magic and memories could unfold.

And then, of course, there was the menu.
Crafted by Jan himself, each dish was a revelation, a celebration of South African heritage with a sophisticated twist. As the night unfolded, it became clear that this wasn’t just a meal. No, it was more like a theatre of dreams—a sensory journey that engaged not just our taste buds but our hearts and souls too.
Dishes to Remember
Now, let’s talk about the food. Because, oh my goodness, the food! Every dish was a masterpiece, but three stood out for me as absolute favourites.
First up, the Biltong Lamington. Yes, you read that right—a savoury twist on a classic treat that was an absolute triumph. The rich, umami flavour of the biltong paired with the sweetness of the lamington was an unexpected delight that had everyone at the table talking.
Then came The Kook Kos, a dish that felt like a warm hug from home. This wasn’t just comfort food; it was a celebration of everything wonderful about South African cuisine. It was hearty, soulful, and bursting with familiar flavours that took me straight back to childhood.

And finally, the Peppermint Crisp Tart. This is a dessert that holds a special place in many South African hearts, but Jan’s version was on another level. Creamy, minty, and just the right amount of sweet—it was the perfect way to end a truly remarkable meal.
A Night to Remember Forever
We laughed, we reminisced, and we toasted to the unexpected joys of life. It was as if time itself had slowed down just for us, letting us soak in every beautiful moment. Shoooweee, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
There’s something extraordinary about sharing a meal like that with people you love, in a place that feels like it was made for creating memories. It wasn’t just a dinner—it was an experience that will stay with us forever, a moment in time that we will always hold dear.
If you ever get the chance to experience JAN Franschhoek, take it. It’s not just a meal—it’s a celebration of everything that makes South Africa so wonderfully unique. Here’s to more moments like this, where good food, good people, and good vibes come together in the most magical way possible.
